What to Expect
At your first acupuncture visit, expect a broad consultation that may not necessarily relate to your chief complaint. Practitioners of acupuncture use systems of meridians to diagnose and treat a vast variety of conditions. These meridians relate to eastern medicine concepts and may not be what you are used to, based on our western medicine culture.
Traditionally, acupuncture uses very fine needles to stimulate points on the meridian channels in order to balance the system. In some cases, moxibustion (a traditional herb that is burned at the end of the needle) is used to intensify the treatment. But if you have a fear of needles, don’t fret! There are other ways to balance meridians, including acupressure, on-skin moxibustion and herbs.
